The boat glides quietly along a ribbon of green under a canopy of shade of the plane. The occasional break in the foliage, we found a church tower in height, enormous vineyards and distant snowcapped peaks of the Pyrenees. It's May, and the time is still blissfully warm and dry. Welcome to the Canal du Midi, which cuts in the sunny Languedoc in southern France. My wife Annie and I are one of only four guests staying at a lovely hotel barge, the Caroline, which makes its way slowly westward for six days along one of the world's most notable channel.

In 1790, the English sailors mutinied on board "HMS Bounty" the ship. They found a safe hiding on the island of Pitcairn. After being settled by the mutineers, the early history of the island was bloody, with many fights and violent deaths. Now the Pitcairn Island is a quiet and fifty families, many of them descendants of the Bounty crew infamous welcome visitors to its idyllic tropical home.

Although I knew that the first settlers of the area called Tianfuzhi Guo (The Land of Sky) four thousand years ago, this reference does not fit easily with the earth plate fouling buildings and the occasional person. HAWAII

Tropical Hawaii conjures up images of warm temperatures, sandy beaches, palm trees, hula dancers and ... Kona coffee freshly brewed. The latter is definitely one of my best memories of the islands. I reserve for the treatment of this holiday weekend and use only what you can relax and appreciate the rich, smooth flavor, the satisfaction it provides.

Decadent capitalism has gotten out of bed before the Communists. Well, not all communists. A few thousands of Chinese citizens are already here, lining up and wanting to pay their respects to the President.
